One day after knocking off nationally ranked Moraine Valley, the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team received votes in the final NJCAA Division II rankings of the season, released Monday afternoon.
The Chargers (23-9) were one of seven teams outside the top 20 to receive votes this week, earning three points. Sandburg earned votes in eight of the 16 polls during the season.
The Chargers on Sunday upset top-seeded Moraine Valley, which entered the game No. 19 in the country, 83-69 in the semifinals of the Region IV District 4 tournament. Sandburg will face South Suburban (28-4) at 6 p.m. Saturday in Palos Hills with a trip to the NJCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament at stake. It’s the third time in the last seven years the fourth-seeded Chargers will play for the region title. Sandburg won the tournament in 2014 and was runner-up to South Suburban in 2017.
South Suburban is the second seed in the tournament and No. 4 in this week’s national rankings. Sandburg faced the Bulldogs on Jan. 3, with South Suburban winning 78-55 on its home floor.
